the volume knob stutters down when turned by hand but goes up ok with steering button. I'll try my old knob, maybe stripped shaft splines.

Sorry man! The thing has been pulled for awhile now. The car has been on jackstands being converted to an all out drag car. My bad on the volume knob, as far as I remembered/knew it was all good. Glad you are happy with the unit though.
